Decision making at ESCOM 2015

James Saunders presented a paper on the role of heuristics and decision making in open form compositions at the Ninth Triennial Conference of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music, held in Manchester at the RNCM from 17-22 August. James has been exploring the application of ideas drawn from game studies, behavioural science and decision making theory in his music recently, and the paper looked at ways in which heuristics can be applied to decisions made by performers when they are presented options. The paper included examples of pieces by Christian Wolff, Joseph Kudirka, and James’s recent piece all voices are heard (2015). The paper can be accessed via Bath Spa’s researchSPAce repository.
