The contemporary music industries present a range of opportunities for emerging artists to share, showcase and develop their music. While the opportunities have never been greater, the challenges which emerging artists and musicians face are complex. This presentation details research findings on the ‘new’ music industries in Australia. It outlines research undertaken between 2012-2014 by a team of researchers (Hughes, Morrow, Keith, Evans and Crowdy) that include findings from seven focus groups and a range of interview participants including artists, artist managers, digital/online strategists, music publishers and representatives of Government agencies in Australia. The paradoxical nature of the challenges and opportunities will be detailed, together with implications and strategies for emerging artists and musicians.
